About

The mystical quality of this work results from the use of interlocking shapes, geometric patterns, bold colors, and dynamic lines. Deep blue colors are prominent throughout and form the foundation upon which the brilliant warm colors dance. In particular, the red and orange colors are rich and varied. The white shapes appear to vibrate against the dark background.

The Artist has cast a spell with spiraling lines and shapes that are reminiscent of an apothecary. While creating this work, John Varriano searched for the effect of in-laid encrusted jewels. To achieve this result, he mixed oil paints with egg yolks to form an emulsion. By using this time-tested technique, he was able to produce the desired effects. The paint is applied thickly with the use of a palette knife.

Varriano is fascinated with the various chemical combinations that provide his desired results. Over the years he has experimented with numerous combinations of mixtures containing oils, spirits, varnishes, and resins.

Architectural elements appear in the composition. One prominent feature is the volute of a classical ionic capital.

The painting offers a decisive union of Medieval and Modern shapes that lend to the overall feeling of mysticism in the work.
