Painting Details

This is the first in a group of twelve paintings built upon the zodiac.  Varriano accomplishes wonderful contracts in this powerful depiction of the crab.  The figure is at once spiky and geometric yet organically synthesized.  The colors are bold and the shapes are strong.  We get a sense of this strange creature emerging from the water and mechanically cranking along through the sand in the bright light of day.
