About

When creating abstract art, Varriano often draws upon the contents of the unconscious mind. With its vast and endless maze, the human mind possesses infinite doors of realization that can be laid open for exploration.   For Varriano, behind one of these doors are caves leading to other realms. They are always deep, open, and undulating. Into these depths, he arrives with blazing torches and a will to create.

While painting on a canvas, he visualizes one of these cave walls before him. When he has finished painting, he closes the door behind him until the next time.   Strikingly, he knows how to return and access these deeper recesses of the mind when he desires to reengage in the act of creation.

This ability has given rise to a connected group of works he has titled 'The Cave Paintings.' The image shown above is Cave Painting number 5.  The shapes and forms in this work appear organic yet also hand-crafted. The application of paint is unctuous and used with substantial thickness. The Artist has allowed the mixture to drip and drag as if painted on a textured wall. The colors retain the qualities of minerals extracted from the Earth.

This work has the contrasting qualities of explosive energy and calm repose.
