Alexandria - Abstract oil painting
1994
This exceptional painting depicts the ancient city of Alexandria. The subject of the work reveals Varriano’s fascination with mathematics: and is constructed on geometric principles that the artist handles so subtly that they take on a mystical quality. The balance of form, structure and color bring the viewer into a modern relationship with the Pythagorean Philosophy of numbers.
Varriano mixed sand into his paints to evoke a tactile experience, giving one a strong connection with the place where the desert meets the Mediterranean Sea. In so doing, he brings the metaphorical “Sands of time” to life for a new generation to contemplate.
The artist applies his paint in such a way that one is swept into the atmosphere and glowing aura of Alexandria. The lighthouse of Alexandria, which for centuries was the tallest structure in the world, is gone but the inspiration of the tower remains. A lofty creation of the ancient world, the lighthouse serves as a reminder of humankind's past achievements and future possibilities.
